PD Newsletter #28: Cloud, culture clash and delivery at China scale

🌧from a drizzly London. I'm keeping it short and sweet this week. Next time around will be a guest edit from our CEO Ben, who will be taking a look at design in the internet era.

If you have a moment, have a read of Emily's write up from our workshop on building digital teams at OGP. We would love to hear from you about other ways your organisations are finding and keeping digital talent.

Ways of working

Mari Nakano explores what design does for government, rooted in her experience of civic tech through the New York City Mayor's office.

Some good questions to kick off a discovery (useful for any kind of organisation).

☁️A toolkit to bring services to the cloud: the Italian Digital Transformation team on how they worked with the Emilia Romagna region to identify which services to move the cloud, using their cloud enablement kit. The kit is published in the open and is well worth delving into for lots of technical guidance and advice.

State of technology

Long read: “When you open the hood in the Epic system, it plays 'U.S.A, U.S.A, U.S.A'”: Denmark's disastrous import of US healthcare system Epic. Deeply depressing. Although some of the failures are put down to cultural differences and language, there are similar stories from the states.

It's Mary Meeker week 🥳. Slide on over to Recode for a summary of the trends on the internet we should be paying attention to. A stat that caught my eye in the China section: Alipay can be used to make a hospital appointment in 250+ cities, and for utility bills in 300+ cities. Just consider the scale of that.

Security researcher Troy Hunt is looking for a new owner for Have I Been Pwned. Currently run by Hunt alone it includes almost 8B records, used from commercial subscribers to individuals to governments.

If you haven't checked it yet, where have you been? Presumably entering in the same password everywhere you go.

🤦‍♂️Facepalm moment of the week: an odd looking photo featuring 15 male tech luminaries and two women turns out to be doctored, with the two women photoshopped in. An apt reflection of the tech industry.

You can train an AI to fake UN speeches in just 13 hours. There are some dark implications for this, but it does make me think we've lost the art of proper speechmaking if we're that predictable.

SUOMI MAINITTU! 🥇🌲 Europe's Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) published this week, with Finland in the lead for the first time. They were also named the world's happiest country, so a good month all round. For a small taste of Finnish culture on an internet theme instead, take a look at Finland's country themed emojis.
This week we got (most of) the Public Digital Affiliates Network together for the first time.
